Re: UT's next coach is......
Kiffin and Davis are probably 2 of the more overrated coaches that they could hire. Sarkisian was always in charge of the offense. SC did not care much at all when Kiffin left and hes still a real unknown. Its not that hard to put together a decent offense when you have the collection of 5 star players that USC has had and really, USC's offense has not been that wonderful even with all of that talent since Chow left. I dont think Sarkisian or Kiffin are really that special. Al Davis may have fired him without giving him a real chance but I just dont think that hes as special as many people make him out to be.
When it comes to Butch Davis, hes a better coach than Kiffin but at the same time, lets realize that he has his postives and negatives. His negatives are that hes an average game day coach. I think hes a better game day coach than people give him credit for. As a recruiter I think hes overrated. Aside from Coker, who couldnt recruit the "state of miami" i.e. the tri county area of palm, broward, and dade. There were 3 coaches that won using the same philosophy before Butch ever came to south florida. At UT and even at UNC, he hasnt been able to recruit nearly as well. Is UNC really improved that much? Im not so sure given that the conference is so down. If Butch is hired by UT, his two best attributes to that team would be player development which outweighs recruiting and team discipline which would keep UT's name off the police blotter. In the SEC where talent is neutralized by the amount of teams with so much talent, I think it hurts Butch, espcially from having a 12-0 type season. He would get the program back on their feet for sure and win alot of games. At the same time, as dumb as Les Miles is, he won a national title so you never know but I do believe Davis would be a much better hire than Kiffin. Davis is probably the closest model to Saban that UT could get.
Re: UT's next coach is......
espnu said that tennessee is wanting to speak with leach from texas tech but who knows if that will become anything since texas tech is having one hell of a season!

you are nuts
davis is showing at UNC that hes a stellar recruitier and that it isnt just from so fla
as a gameday coach hes a nightmare.......but hes done wonders at UNC already in terms of brining in talent
secondly cokers problem wasnt recruiting......it was player development.......that was his biggest shortfall as a HC.......his kids often never got any better from their first day on campus to their last
kiffin will also get a HC gig
Re: UT's next coach is......
Coker didnt recruit south florida well at all. He was out getting Akeem Jolla while Santonio Holmes was sitting around waiting for a offer. Max Jean Gillies was sitting right there also. How many times did he go after guys out of state like Bryan Cushing only to get left with guys like Dmitri Stewart. He went up against Carroll and lost nearly every time while LSU was raiding south florida getting guys like Ricky Jean Francois who never even received an offer from Miami. He left scholarships on the table every year while never oversigning and went years without getting a wide receiver. Miami had Brian Monroe at wide reciever who was a punter. If thats what you call good recruiting, so be it. Even when Miami was desperate for a wide receiver, they would wait until the last minute to go after a kid like Bryan Robiskie only to get turned down. Coker recruited kids out of high school that couldnt even catch. Khalil Jones may have looked the part but he wasnt even good in high school. Thats piss poor recruiting regardless of player development. It was piss poor to even try and play Willie Williams as a cover 2 weakside linebacker when it was clearly obvious that his best abilities were to rush from the LOS ala what Spencer Adkins is doing right now. Coker didnt even recruit for his own system. Kirby Freeman did not fit anything Miami did on offense while they could have had Xavier Lee. I realize Lee sucked in the end but he was the right fit for that offense, not Freeman. Tell me about recruiting Derek Shaw, Pat Devlin, Nick Fanuzzi, and Daniel Steggal. How did those work out?
Davis isnt a bad recruiter at all, hes a good recruiter. The point is, hes not going to be able to lock down the goldmine of all areas of recruiting when hes in the middle of a slightly above average football state and the same would be said if he were at UT. He would recruit well but if you think hes going to end up with 50 some pro prospects on his roster like the 2000 roster at Miami, you are nuts.
Yeah Kiffin will get an HC gig, it doesnt mean hes a good coach though. Turning a bottom feeder around like Syracuse wont be easy. He better hold out for a good job.
Leach would be the best hire. He does more with less talent than all of those guys.
Re: UT's next coach is......
RJF had an offer from miami as did homes i believe
i know ricky didnt have the grades to get in
coker couldnt manage a roster.......i agree 100%
kahlil jones was a good HS WR......as was jolla, ryan moore, etc......thats where i was going with the lack of player development bit
he got the talent he just couldnt do [censored] with it
as for devlin and shaw.....shaw did nothing and to date devlin hasnt either.......no big losses
fanuzzi will never do anything at bama and stegall was a desperation signing to replace the loss of devlin on the roster who was a better baseball player anyway
what does that mean?
he also had kyle wright who was the top qb coming out of HS and he couldnt do [censored] with him.......so frankly would it have mattered if he recruitied a mutation of kosar, kelly and vinny? proably not.......he likely would have wasted that talent also
xavier lee didnt fit anything in our offense either.......he was basically a black kirby freeman

Botch's first recruiting class last year at UNC--32nd in the nation per Rivals. The only guy that's getting real burn as a true freshman this year is Quinton Coples--who's a part-time starter at DE (note--he was the #6 DE in the country, so he was talented for sure--but also lived in Kinston, NC--less than 2 hours from Chapel Hill).
Botch's class so far this year at UNC--15th in the nation per Rivals. The only 5* guy that they've got is Donte Moss, and John Blake reeled him in...plus it didn't take that much "reeling" anyway--dude's from Jacksonville, NC--2 hours south of Chapel Hill. He's gotten a lot of local guys to commit early this season after having only 5 guys commit before the calendar turned over to 2008 last year for the '08 class. More 4*'s so far than last year--but unless they pull in another 5* or more 4*'s, their class will likely drop in the rankings as teams like Miami, UF, FSU, USC, UGA, LSU, Bama, and others get the late-deciding higher rated 4*/5* kids to commit to them closer to signing day to fill out their classes (because they typically wait longer).
Botch has not pulled in ANY player out of the state of Florida in his first 2 recruiting classes so far.
The talent that's turning the wheels for him this year was Bunting's talent that's matured enough this year to be a major impact.
So, as Kotite said--you're nuts.

Neither one did because, as some "insiders" at Grassy put it, Coker was working to branch out more in national recruiting--where he swung and missed terribly.
As for the rest of your post--Kotite didn't say any of the QB's were good that he mentioned--that's the whole fargin point. He whiffed on lots of other guys that could have beaten out Wright or Freeman b/c he wanted to recruit guys like Shaw/Devlin/Fanuzzi. And then, he poaches Stegall from Arkansas St., who in turn told us to go eff ourselves by choosing to play baseball. The point is (and I think Kotite made it but you missed it) that we shouldn't have recruited ANY of those guys to start with. That was Coker's main malfunction.
Re: UT's next coach is......
CoeburnCane nailed it
Also, he simply didnt recruit in numbers. For example, Coker left scholarships on the table. He would have never recruited Theron Collier. He would have stopped after Aldarius Johnson and Tommy Streeter went somewhere else then got an FIU kid at the last minute.
RJF was never offered and I always found it funny how guys like Vidal Hazelton didnt have the grades and then suddenly had the grades. Terrible recruiting.
Talk about player development. Guys like Soldinger, Kehoe, and Curtis Johnson didnt forget how to coach all of a sudden. They ran out of talent. Soldinger never deserved to lose his job, hes as good of a coach as it gets. Johnson got an nfl job. Those guys went from developing great players to getting bad players that werent developing. Some of those players were plan C kids, some positions just went completely neglected and the numbers still arent there today, and for the most part, there were too many guys that were brought in that werent real football players. I can live with Santonio Holmes scholarship going to Sinorice Moss but its painful knowing that Leggett was a track star in a football uniform while a real football player from the Muck was going to Ohio State. Jolla went to play in Hal Mummes wide open offense and still wasnt any good. Every transfer with the exception of Charlie Jones has done nothing.
Even when Coker did find talent in kids like Bryan Robiskie, he waited until too late and couldnt bring him in. Kids is south florida were dying to play for the U and ended up forced to go elsewhere.
The point on XLee was that he was dying to be a Cane and was a much better fit than Freeman, more talented than Freeman, and a Florida kid. It didnt work out for him, hindsight is 20/20 but thats the kind of kid Shannon would take a chance on and it would be worth it.
Coker got his one quarterback a year, never told that kid he could compete for the starting job, and never promoted competition. I gurantee you that if Aldarious Johnson becomes a star, Shannon is going to be telling Rueben Randle that he still has a chance to take his position and that hes going to get playing time if he does what he is supposed to do. Competition promotes hard work and development. Coker never got kids on board and never promoted competition when he did get fortunate enough to get kids onboard.
Re: UT's next coach is......
soldinger was a good coach until the day coker canned him to save his own ass
kehoe was always overrated and was never a very good coach as can been seen in the handful of kids he sent to the NFL over 20+ years
CJ got an NFL job........the WRs stopped developing after he left
leggett was a good HS WR which is why he was as highly recruited as he was........problems were that A he never developed in college and B his attitude sucked ass
Re: UT's next coach is......
Espn bottom line reports that Brian Kelly is the leading candidate to get the job.
